Basic Troubleshooting Guide

Quick checks before you assume the worst.

Many microwave problems are either user technique (see Heat Distribution Patterns) or cleanliness/maintenance (see Maintenance & Troubleshooting). This guide focuses on safe first steps: stop, inspect, clean, and isolate variables.

The Oven Runs But Food Stays Cold

Confirm you are not accidentally on a timer mode, confirm the door fully closes, and confirm you are using microwave-safe containers. If the unit sounds normal but nothing heats, the magnetron may be failing—this is beyond a beginner fix—compare with Maintenance & Diagnostic Analysis.

Sparking or Burning Smells

Stop immediately. Remove metal. Inspect for charred food residue. If sparking persists without metal, inspect the waveguide cover and interior coating. More detail is in Maintenance & Troubleshooting.
